Obituary for Helen J. Meyer


Helen J. Meyer Helen J. (nee, Sherin) (Roberts) Meyer, 82, of West Salem, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at home. She was born in Winona, Minn., on May 30, 1934, to Otto and Velma Sherin. After graduating from Winona High School, Helen continued her education at community college and then, worked in Minneapolis for several years. She fulfilled her dream of driving to California with a couple of girlfriends and landed in San Francisco. It was there that she met Larry Roberts whom she married in 1960. They ultimately settled in Los Gatos, Calif., and where she worked in Silicon Valley for several years. They had two children, Michael Roberts who was born in 1964 and Leanne Roberts born in 1967. Helen chose to move her family back to the Midwest to raise her children and ended up settling in West Salem. After she deciding to go back to work she landed at Trane Company in La Crosse where she worked for 18 years until her retirement at age 62. After losing her husband of 34 years and spending several years alone, she met Harley Roger Meyer. Helen and Harley married in 1999 and had a long and happy 18 years of life together. Harley preceded Helen in death on December 27, 2016. Helen was an avid and loyal member of the Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51 Ladies Auxiliary of West Salem and the 40 & 8 Voiture Local 830 Cabane. Survivors include her daughter, Leanne (Derek) Romo of Fallbrook, Calif.; a granddaughter, Faith Michael Romo; and step-sons, Lynn (Raenel) and Lonny (Sue) Meyer and their families. In addition to her first and second husbands, Helen was preceded in death by her son, Michael Roberts. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at the Presbyterian Church of West Salem, 625 N. Franklin St. Pastor Stephanie M. Steiner and Pastor Larry Olson will officiate. Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and may be given to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse for cancer research in Mike Roberts’ memory.
