Obituary for Spencer "Sam" C. Olson

Spencer “Sam” Olson, 86, of Mindoro, passed away peacefully, Friday, July 28, 2017, surrounded by his family at his home. He was born Feb. 17, 1931, in La Crosse County, to Clarence and Florence (Sullivan) Olson, and attended Mindoro area schools. Sam was a veteran of the United States Army serving on the front lines in Korea during the Korean War until being honorably discharged. About a week after returning from Korea, he met Shirley McConnell and they were married in 1955. Sam worked various jobs: first, at Dolly Madison, second, for Hollis Construction as a stone mason, and third, at Ft. McCoy as a boiler tender; as well as a few others along the way. He and Shirley were famous for the charcoal chicken they cooked for many community events. In his spare time, Sam enjoyed tinkering in the garage doing woodworking projects. Survivors include his wife, Shirley; his children, Cheryl (David) Osley, Kim (Mike) Page, Spencer Jr., (Lisa) Olson, Susan Olson (Jeff Huber), and Tracy (Steve) Smith; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary (Chauncey) Stetzer and Myra Smaby; sisters-in-law, Linda (Doug) Waite, Jackie (Dennis) Timm, and Helen McConnell; brothers-in-law, Lonnie (Rose), Gene (Jo), Jim (Evelyn), and Dan (Annette) McConnell; many, many special nieces and nephews; other relatives; and friends. Sam was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Louise (Glen) Sacia; his brother, David (Carolyn) Olson and his grandchildren, T.J. Storandt, Carrie Clements, and Sommer Clements. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Mindoro Lutheran Church. Rev. J. David Bersagel will officiate. Immediately following the memorial service, military honors will be rendered by the Gunderson-Gilbertson American Legion Post 507 of Mindoro and the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Jostad Chapel, West Salem, is in charge of arrangements.
