Obituary for Kathryn M. Sallander


Kathryn “Kate” (Furlano) Sallander Kathryn “Kate” (Furlano) Sallander, 90, of La Crosse, passed away, Monday, July 31, 2017, at Eagle Crest South in La Crosse. She was born on April 8, 1927, in Genoa, Wis. Kate attended Lansing High School in Lansing, Iowa, and graduated in 1945, along with her high school sweetheart Orville Sallander. They were married June 16, 1951, and were together for 62 years. Kate liked to tell how she worked for an insurance agency that was right next to the Sweet Shop. She was still delighted to get a box of those candies for her 90th birthday. Kate enjoyed gardening, travel, golf and her family. Together with Orv, she enjoyed 20 years of wintering in Tucson, Ariz. Kate enjoyed card games and especially beating Orv (or any one) at cribbage. She and Orv were members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church for over 60 years. Kate belonged to Saint Anne’s Ladies, worked in the rectory, was a Eucharistic Minister and volunteered many hours for the parish. She worked at Coulee Bank from 1973 until 1985. Kate volunteered for the Red Cross Blood Drives, and was a member of and volunteered for the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and Moose Club – Women of the Moose. Kate is survived by her five children, Joann Sonibare of Burnsville, Minn., Cyndie (Randy) Burnett of Pinehurst, N.C., Peter (Patricia) Sallander of Holmen, Wis., Carol (Steve) Smythe of North Muskegon, Mich., and Michael (Carol) Sallander of La Crosse; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Marie Deja of River Falls, Wis.; three brothers, Francis “Frex” (Arla) Furlano of Stoddard, Gregory (Evie) Furlano of Genoa, and Joseph (Avis) Furlano of Onalaska; and many, many, nieces and nephews. Kate was preceded in death by her loving husband, Orville Sallander; her parents, Rose and Frank Furlano; three sisters, Rose Kimball, Cecelia (James) Falada, and Jennie (John) Brendel; two brothers, Nuncie Furlano and Paul (June) Furlano; and her grandson, Gabe Sallander. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday Aug. 5, 2017, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1333 13th St., La Crosse. Father G. Richard Roberts will officiate. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m., until the time of Mass, Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Catholic Charities of La Crosse. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Woodruff Chapel, La Crosse, is in charge of arrangements.
