Obituary for Herman “Butch” Troyanek

Herman Joseph “Butch” Troyanek, 87, of La Crosse, died with his wife by his side, Friday March 2, 2018, at Gundersen Health System. He was born January 24, 1931, in La Crosse, to Herman and Della Troyanek. Butch graduated from Central High School. He married Betty Jean Podawitz on June 11, 1949. Butch worked for Stellick Oil for many years. Butch and his wife opened South Lanes Pizza which they later sold. During this time he also managed South Lanes Bowling which he continued to do until he retired. Butch was a member of the Elks Club and an officer of the Moose Lodge and member of Moose Legion. He sang with a local Barbershop Quartet. As a young adult, he was involved with the Civil Air Patrol. Butch was an avid hunter and outdoor sportsman and enjoyed hunting trips out west. He loved watching sports, especially the Packers, Brewers, and Badgers. Butch was an enthusiastic bowler and a member of the 700 club. Butch is survived by his wife of nearly 69 years, Betty Jean of La Crosse; sons, Gary (Connie) of La Crosse and Jeff (Cindy) of New Munster, Wis., daughters, Geri (William) Stangl and Nancy (Tony) Greenlee, both of Eau Claire; daughters-in-law, Jo Troyanek of La Crosse and Bea Klinger of Windsor, Colo.; brother, James (Linda) Troyanek of Nekoosa, Wis.; sister-in-law, Jalayne Troyanek; 16 grandchildren, Matt (Ruth) Troyanek, Lisa (Morgan) Osantowski, Mike Stangl, Bryan (Julie) Stangl, Joe (Michelle) Stangl, Angie Schilling, Kaydee (Per) Lee, Allison Troyanek, Tiffany Goins, Melissa Troyanek, Christopher Troyanek, Jacqui (Trent) Olson, Steve Troyanek, Christina (Andrew) Jankowski, and Andrew Troyanek; 28 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, David and Paul; grandson, Nicholas Troyanek; granddaughter, Jeanne Rud; brother, LeRoy Troyanek; and sister, Mildred (Donald) Mannel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 4141 Mormon Coulee Rd. Rev. John Stennes-Spidahl will officiate. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., concluding with a Moose Celebration at 7 p.m., Tuesday, at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Woodruff Chapel, 4239 Mormon Coulee Rd., La Crosse. A visitation will also be held from 10 a.m., until the time of service Wednesday at the church.
