Obituary for Renata H. Hemker

Renata H. Hemker
Renata H. Hemker, 93, of West Salem, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2011, at Mulder Health Care Facility, West Salem.
She was born May 29, 1918, in the Town of Barre to Henry D. and Alma (Bey) Schmeckpeper.  On February 18, 1939, she married Louis J. Hemker at St. John's Lutheran Church in Barre Mills and he preceded her in death on October 22, 2004, after sharing 65 years of marriage.  Renata was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Barre Mills where she was also a member of the Ladies Aid.  She was also a member of the Barre Homemakers.  Renata was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who helped her husband around the farm and made their house a home.  She enjoyed gardening and being in the kitchen, especially baking.  Renata was a hospitable person who was always willing to help where she could.  Her grandchildren were a big part of her life and she looked forward to spending time with them.  Renata was very loved by her family and will be sadly missed.
Survivors include four children, Mavis (Wendell) Norder, Karen (Roger) Strangman, Kenneth (Dawn) Hemker, and Lynette (Hal) Schomberg; eleven grandchildren, Christine (Peter) Baganz, Mark (Katie) Norder, Timothy (Christina) Norder, Samuel Norder, Kevin Strangman, Vicki Strangman, Lisa (Daniel) Fenske, Melissa (James) Lockman, Ryan Hemker, Stacey (Dominique) Minjarez, and Brad (Heather) Schomberg; 17 great-grandchildren; her sister, Dorothy (Willard) Otto; one brother-in-law, Wilfred (Lolly) Hemker; three sisters-in-law, Marie Barnes, Doris Salow, and Donna (Richard) Chamberlain; and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Frieda (Bothe) Schmeckpeper; three sisters, Luella (Lyle) Raffelson, Irene (Belmore) Jones, and Jeanette Schmeckpeper; one brother, Albert (Marion) Schmeckpeper; three brothers-in-law, Bernard (Esther) Hemker, Fritz Barnes, and Charles Salow; and four sisters-in-law, Erna (Donald) Lemke, Vera (Earl) Linse, Rose (Raymond) Rhodes, and Bernice Hemker.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, W3565 CTH M, Barre Mills.  Rev. Andrew Schultz will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, (Jostad Chapel), 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem, on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. John's Lutheran Church, Barre Mills, or to Luther High School.  Online condolences may be sent at
