Obituary for Gaylord L. Gruen

Gaylord L. Gruen, age 87, of West Salem, died Thursday, May 24, 2018, at Hillview Health Care Center. He was born June 27, 1930, in Wilton, Wis., to Louis and Ella (Goldbeck) Gruen. The family moved to Tomah and then to Onalaska where both his parents died when he was age 16. He and Geneva Lawrence were married in 1950. Gaylord built a house in Holmen where they lived with their son, Ron. They were later divorced. He married Elsie Hanson Shefelbine in 1971 and became stepfather to her children: Allene, Robert, and Lisa. Elsie passed away in 1973. He and Ron then moved to Onalaska. Gaylord married Roberta Grams Kruger in 1978. They moved with her daughter, Kelly, to four acres near West Salem. Besides various jobs as a youth, Gaylord worked at Segelke-Kohlhaus Millwork of La Crosse, the Holmen Creamery, and Aramark of La Crosse where he was a route representative for 24 years until he retired in 1990. Gaylord enjoyed fishing year round, going to auctions, working in his garage and the vegetable garden, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends, especially Gus and Jane. He was a great father and a devout Christian. He is survived by his wife, Roberta; son, Ronald (Renee) Gruen of West Salem; stepdaughter, Kelly (Netwal) Samuels of La Crosse; four grandchildren, Shawn (Aubrey) Gruen, Jenna (Casey) Kapter, Alec Netwal, and Kate Netwal; three great-grandchildren, Hannah and Xavior Gruen and Jaxon Kaptor; sister, Eunice (William) Meyer of Onalaska; brother, Larry Gruen of Tomah; and six nieces and nephews and their families. Gaylord was preceded in death by his second wife, Elsie; his parents; brother, Leonard Gruen of La Crosse; and a nephew, Craig Gruen of Tomah. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30 2018, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, West Salem. Pastor Jon and Jean Schmidt will officiate. Burial will follow in the Onalaska Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
