Obituary for Frances I. Young


Frances I. Young, known for her infectious laugh and generosity, celebrated her 103 birthday on St. Patrick’s Day. After a long and full life, she passed away on June 15, 2018. Frances was born to Selma G. (Wolfe) and James L. Riggs in Chehalis, Washington on March 17, 1915. The family subsequently moved to Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania where she graduated from Bloomsburg High School in 1932. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1936 from Bloomsburg State Teachers College (now Bloomsburg University), where she met her future husband of 53 years, Bernard (Bernie) Young, who also graduated with a degree in Education. Frances taught French, English and Latin from 1937-1941 at Turbotville High School in Pennsylvania. Fran and Bernie married in Bloomsburg on October 11, 1940. From 1951-53, she worked in the Admissions Office at the University of Illinois while Bernie completed his graduate studies. In 1953, the Youngs moved with their son Jeffrey and daughter Suzanne to La Crosse, where Bernie became Placement Director of at Wisconsin State College, La Crosse (now UW-L), then principal of the its Campus School, and Fran worked in the Technical Services Department of Florence Wing Library and then Murphy Library from 1957-1980. Fran was active in the Grandview Hospital Guild (located on Main at 17th St), UW-L Campus Dames, the Campus Dames Twenty Year Club and UW-L Merry Widows group. For twenty years after Bernie’s death in 1993, Fran knit and crocheted hundreds of baby items for Coulee Region RSVP. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Frances is preceded in death by her husband Bernie, her parents and her brother Leon C. Riggs of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Young in Milwaukee and daughter Suzanne Young in Holmen. The family would like to thank all those people who shared experiences and laughter with our mother and who, in recent years looked out for her and made staying in her own home a reality. Thank you to Dr. Steven Pavela and Karen Voight from Mayo, to RSVP volunteers who provided rides to her appointments, and her extraordinary friends and neighbors who truly cared for her. Frances requested that no memorial service be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to UW-L Foundation, P.O. Box 1148, La Crosse, WI 54601 c/o B. J.
