Obituary for Helen Mikkelson

Helen L. Mikkelson, 100, of West Salem formerly of Mindoro, passed away, Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. She was born at home in South Beaver Creek, rural Ettrick, to John and Julia (Gilbo) Swenson. On September, 15, 1937, Helen married Wilford Mikkelson at the parsonage in French Creek, rural Ettrick. While Wilford was working as a farmer, she was a homemaker. Wilford and Helen enjoyed dancing and going to movies, when movies were 25 cents. She was an excellent baker who make the best cookies and lefse, according to her children and grandchildren. Helen said being a grandmother brought her joy and watching them grow only nurtured this bliss. Survivors include her children, Joyce (Roger) Heineck, Diana Mikkelson (husband, Larry Rodenberg), and Dennis (Sharon) Mikkelson; five grandchildren, Ronald, Susan (Michael) Bjorkman, Kari (Samuel) Jandt, Amy Matson, and Brent (Ann) Mikkelson; 15 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Raymond (Julie) Swenson; her sister, Stella Bryhn; her sister-in-law, Janice Bott (Swenson); and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Wilford; her son, Harold; her grandson, John Heineck; her infant grandson, Reid Mikkelson; her granddaughter, Sandra Pierce; two brothers, Arthur "Art" (Mary) Swenson and Lester Swenson; one sister, Mildred (Clifford) Haag; one sister-in-law, Marcella Swenson; and one brother-in-law, Arthur "Art" Bryhn Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, July 6, 2018, at Mindoro Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Farmington Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 12:30 a.m., until the time of service, Friday, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Mindoro Lutheran Church. The family would like to thank the staff of Mulder Health Care Facility in West Salem for the continued care of Helen; as well as the palliative care staff of Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, for the compassion they showed during this difficult time.
