Obituary for Herbert "Herb" A. Kramer


Herbert “Herb” August Kramer, 89, of La Crosse, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2018, at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse. He was born in La Crosse on Aug. 7, 1928, to Herbert and Alice (Helke) Kramer. Herb was baptized and confirmed at Trinity United Church of Christ in Mormon Coulee where he was a life-long member. He attended Washington rural school in Mormon Coulee. On May 31, 1951, he married Phyllis Rieple. They purchased and lived on the Kramer family farm in Breidel Coulee which had been in the family for 99 years. They later moved to a larger farm in 1962. Together they had two children, son, Jerry Herbert Kramer (Sue Henderson) and daughter, Linda (Steve) Mader. Herb served on several agricultural committees, he was a Pioneer Seed Representative for 34 years, was in charge of the Trinity U.C.C. cemeteries since he was 21 years old, served on church council and committees including the committee for the new church in 1969. Herb also was a director for the Vernon Electric Coop from 1988 until 2013, a member of the Mormon Coulee Lions Club since 1979, Auction Clerk for Don Temp for many years, and served as secretary of Shelby Mutual Aid and Benevolent Society for many years. In addition to his wife of 67 years, Phyllis, and his two children, Herb is survived by his grandchildren, Andrew (Elizabeth) Mader and their son, Judah, Erin (Mike) McTigue and their daughter, Fiona, Deke (Janell) Mader and their children, Sidney and Vera, Dillon Mader (Katie Thompson), Marie (Kevin) MacGlashin and their children, Ireland and Cullen, and Jill (Ben) Troyanek and their children, Waylon and Garrison. Herb was also survived by his sister-in-law, Bernice Rieple; many special nieces and nephews; and his very special friend, Bernie Pfaff. In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded death by his sister, Mariam (Ervin) Kapanke and Rosella (Philip) Breidel; and two brothers-in-law, Frank Rieple and Ray Rieple. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 7, 2018, at Trinity United Church of Christ, W4888 Harvest Lane, La Crosse. Rev. Brandon Perrine will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday, both at Trinity U.C.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Trinity U.C.C., the Church Cemetery Fund, the Mormon Coulee Lions Club, or a charity of the donor’s choice. Herb was a man with a strong work ethic, integrity, and a kind gentle spirit.
