Obituary for Joan Leland


Joan Leland, 59, of West Salem passed away peacefully at her home on July 10, 2018, after a courageous 17-month battle with breast cancer. She was born January 18, 1959, to Peter and Julia (Schreier) Leis in Viroqua, Wis. On October 25, 1980, Joan was united in marriage to Terry Leland. She worked as an accountant for almost 39 years for several firms serving the grocery industry including Gateway Foods, Fleming, Scrivner, and for the last four years, Hansen’s IGA in Bangor, Wis. Joan was active in the PCCW at the Church of St. Leo the Great; serving on many committees, teaching religious education, and inspiring others to get involved in the parish. Joan enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was very fond of her time spent at Lake Neshonoc taking pontoon rides, cruising in the golf cart, and nights spent around the campfire. In her past time, she found joy crocheting, quilting, and other crafting. She will forever be remembered by the many lives she touched with her strong faith and kind heart. She is survived by her husband, Terry; her son, Marcus Leland of Cornell, Wis.; her special niece, Julie (David) Christensen of Poynette, Wis; siblings, Carol (Charles Morgan) Leis of Sparta, Wis., Barbara (Ted) Denning of Chippewa Falls, Wis., Sharon (the late Nick) Trujillo of Melrose, Wis., Patrick (Shannon) Leis of La Farge. Philip Leis of Cashton, and Susan (Howard) Larson of Bangor, Wis.; many nieces, nephews; great nieces, great nephews; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Julia; father and mother-in-law, Orvis & Althea Leland; twin sister, Janet Chapiewsky; and brother-in-law, Nick Trujillo. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 16, 2018, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 210 W. Hamlin St., West Salem. Father Kennedy and Deacon Zietlow will officiate. A rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m., with a visitation to follow, concluding at 7 p.m., Sunday. A visitation will also be held from 9:30 a.m., until the time of mass, Monday, all at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, West Salem.
