Obituary for Donald James "Donnie" San Diego

Donald “Donnie” James San Diego passed away unexpectedly on September 4, 2018, in La Crosse, Wis. Donnie was born in San Diego, California on November 19, 1987, to Vicki San Diego (Johnson). Four years later, David Johnson came into Donnie’s life and gladly took over the role of Dad. Donnie was a lover of life, he was always surrounded by friends finding new adventures to go on. He took pride in taking care of his body, a regular at the People’s Food Co-Op, Donnie enjoyed eating organic, he also loved going to the gym. Donnie was a fantastic cook, as a teenager, Donnie and his sister Jessica would have late night “cooking shows” in their kitchen, making breakfast foods, more notably omelets. Most recently, Donnie was employed at Buzzard Billy’s in La Crosse; he loved his job and his co-workers. He made countless friends and memories during his time there! Donnie loved music. He played guitar, drums, piano, and bass; he was also fluent with his mixing table. Donnie loved showing off his talents at the Popcorn Tavern in La Crosse, on Instagram and Facebook. Donnie put on concerts for his little sister, Jessica when she was young, in the basement of their Colorado home. In his teenage years, Donnie was an avid roller-blader, Donnie and his Dad made a ramp for him and his friends in the neighborhood to skate on. They would spend hours outside skating on the ramp after lugging it out of the garage. Donnie moved to Wisconsin from Colorado, here he met a beautiful young lady and together they welcomed a son, Alec. He loved his little boy endlessly and enjoyed playing toys and putting together Legos with him. Donnie enjoyed going golfing with his dad in the spring and summer. Impromptu trips to the golf course always brought a smile to Donnie and Dad’s faces, looking forward to a rare afternoon or morning out with each other. Donnie and his Mom loved taking small trips shopping, spending an afternoon catching up, grabbing lunch or dinner and spending some much needed mother-son time together. Donnie took time to share his love and passion of music to both of his younger Sisters, Jessica and Lily. He was always showing them the newest songs he learned to play, bands he discovered, and songs he fell in love with. Jessica and Donnie shared their love and passion for music, they enjoyed spending time together at concerts, most notably Warped Tour. Lily was too young to go to concerts, so they enjoyed trading music and picking on each other relentlessly. Donnie affectionately called Lily “Woo-Woo” from the day she was born. He was very proud of his baby sister, and was excited to see the woman she would become. Donnie will be terribly missed by his family and friends. His exit from this world was and still is unfathomable for us all. Donnie leaves behind his beloved son, Alec age, 5, his mother, Vicki; father, David; sisters, Jessica, age 24, and Lily age, 13; he also leaves his paternal, grandmother, Margaret Johnson; along with many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Josie Stalker; paternal grandfather, Duane Johnson; aunt, Ann Walker; cousin, Christopher Lee; and his niece or nephew of unknown gender, Kadyn. A celebration of life will be held at Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52 in La Crosse on Tuesday, September 18 from 4pm-8pm, all friends and family are welcome. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be given to Donnie’s son, Alec.
