Obituary for Owen W. Schuldt

Owen Wilbert Schuldt was born January 21, 1951, to Wilbert and Margaret Schuldt in Caledonia Minnesota and was welcomed by older sister, Kathleen. He passed away, Saturday, February 2, 2019, at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse. Early on, Wilbert and Margaret realized Owen had special needs and were diligent in pursuing all possible avenues of care including frequent trips to the University of Madison, Wisconsin. With no special needs educational opportunities available in the area, Owen was placed into services intended to have the most benefit for him. Wilbert and Margaret remained staunch advocates to get the services he needed while desiring him to be closer to home and family. Owen lived in Alexandria, MN and Fairbault, MN. He moved to the Minnesota State Hospital in Rochester, MN in 1969. Kathleen, his older sister, lived in Rochester at that time and they spent many days together. Kathy later died in 1971 and Owen missed her dearly. Owen remained at the Minnesota State Hospital, Rochester until just prior to its closing, when be moved to Albert Lea, MN, becoming one of the first individuals to receive services in the Minnesota group home model of care. He later moved to Lancer House in La Crescent, MN, a home in Spring Grove, MN and to a home in Caledonia where he remained until his passing. Owen was a kind, quiet, gentle, and polite man of few words. Owen enjoyed everything about being raised on a farm and this love continued throughout his life with cows, tractors, chickens and pigs being favorite topics of conversation when he chose to speak. He also enjoyed fishing with his dad and special staff, Craig Bender, who he enjoyed teasing about most anything. Owen is preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen in 1971, and his mother, Margaret in 2011. He is survived by his father, Wilbert; sisters, Alta (Charles) Lampert; Gloria (Roger) Suehs and Sheila (Steven) Corcoran; many nieces and nephews and their families; and many friends. Owen will be fondly remembered for his knowing looks, his love of farm magazines, and his quiet sense of humor. The family would like to express special thanks to ABLE and ABC Works staff. He loved his home and work. Your care and service to him has not gone unnoticed. Words cannot express our gratitude for all you have done for Owen. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, at the Able TRC, 1004 Loeffler Ave., Caledonia. A visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Pastor William Reese will officiate. Burial will be in the Peace Church Cemetery, (Crooked Creek), Freeburg, Minn.
