Obituary for Gladys Mae Heitman


Gladys Mae Heitman, 90, of New Albin, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2019, at Thornton Manor Nursing Center, Lansing, Iowa. She was born January 25, 1929, to George and Caroline (Meyer) Meyer. Gladys was baptized and confirmed at St John's United Church of Christ, Wheatland. She attended rural school in Iowa Township. On June 9th 1950, she married Elmer Heitman at St John's Church and together they farmed in Union City Township. They celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2000. Gladys was an active member of St John's Women's fellowship and choir. She enjoyed quilting with the other women at the church. She served on many committees; 4-H, senior citizens, and did volunteer work at Thornton Manor, and at Makee Manor. While Elmer was alive, they enjoyed square dancing and traveling; Switzerland, Alaska, Canada, and Arizona to name a few. She was an avid bird watcher, loved tending to her flower gardens, and loved playing card and board games with her family. Survivors include her children, Alan (Lori) Heitman of New Albin, Iowa, Darlene (Dave) Eggum of LaCrosse, Wis., Jack (Barb) Heitman of Perioa, Ill., and David (Janette) Heitman of Lansing, Iowa; son-in-law, Todd Blanchard; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grand-children; sisters-in law; Gladys Tegtmeier and Delores Brumm; many nieces and nephews; and two life-long special friends, Violet Beneke and Stella Burmester. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, George and Caroline Meyer; husband, Elmer Heitman; daughters, Carolyn Aitchison and Lori Blanchard; sisters, Irma Johnson and Lillian Wuennecke; and brother-in law; Roy Wuennecke. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 2, 2019, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Wheatland, rural New Albin. Pastor Paul Burgess will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday at the New Albin Community Center, New Albin, Iowa, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the church.
