Obituary for Stewart P. Higdon

Stewart “Stew” Paul Higdon III, 61, of West Salem passed away unexpectedly, Saturday, August 24, 2019, at home with his loving family present. Stew was born on September 18, 1957 to Stewart and Margaret (Huber) Higdon. After attending West Salem High School, he went on to join the military and proudly served in the Navy on the USS Haleakala. During his time of service, he traveled the world and would often share stories of his adventures spent with his Navy brothers. His Navy reunions continued to bring him great memories! On October 13, 1984, Stew married the love of his life, Susan Kessler, at Trinity Lutheran Church in La Crosse, WI. They would have celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary this year. After getting married, Stew and Sue then started their family and had four daughters. Stew loved to spend time with his family especially his grandchildren, and was looking forward to welcoming a new Granddaughter due in September. Stew spent time working in construction and also owned his own businesses. One of his dreams was to open a bar and grill and he accomplished that by opening Breakers in 2008. Stew had many hobbies in life, but he was especially passionate about playing pool and had many trophies of his accomplishments. He made many lifelong friends from his years of shooting pool. He also loved getting out on the golf course for a good round of golf with his friends. Stew was also an avid outdoorsman and could be found hunting in the fall and fishing year round. In the summer time he loved to ride his motorcycle, and one of his favorite holidays was the fourth of July. Stewart is survived by his wife, Sue of West Salem, Wis.; his children, Ashley (Jeremy) Foreman of Rockland, Wis., Samantha (Marc Luethe) Higdon of Barre Mills, Wis., Ericka Higdon of West Salem, Wis., and Mackenzie Higdon of West Salem, Wis.; 3 grandchildren, Trenton, Ella, and Holden Foreman, and soon to be fourth grandchild from his daughter Samantha; sisters, Connie (Mike) Jeffers of Cottage Grove, Wis, Jan (Larry) Liles of West Salem, Wis, and Sara (Mike) Gorniak of West Salem, Wis.; brother-in-law, Dennis Aspenson of Onalaska, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews. Stewart is preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law, Janet Kessler, father-in-law, Edward Kessler, his sister Bethany (Higdon) Aspenson, and his faithful dog, Willie. The family would like to thank the Officers and Paramedics for their dedication and hard work to care for Stew in his final moments. Also, a special thank you to all Stew’s devoted friends for brightening up his life, he loved sharing stories of your time together. A time of remembrance will be held at 12 noon, on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019, at the Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Jostad Chapel, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem.
