Obituary for Shirley J. Hesse


Shirley Jean Hesse was born September 7, 1936 in La Crosse, Wisconsin to Arthur O. and Meta (nee Schieche) Veglahn. She was baptized on October 25th, 1936 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church by Reverend Theo J. Mueller. Her sponsors were her grandfather Charles Schieche and her aunt Lillian Veghahn (Albrecht). Shirley moved with her family to a farm in Nodine, Minnesota. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nodine on August 7th, 1949, by Pastor Otto Klett. Her confirmation verse was Philippians chapter 4, verse 13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me” In the early 1950’s she moved with her family to La Crescent, Minnesota. After her primary schooling, Shirley attended La Crosse School of Cosmetology graduating on May 21, 1957. She was a licensed beautician and cosmetology manager. She initially was employed at a beauty salon in the Exchange Building, La Crosse. On September 6th,1958 she married Maynard F. Hesse at First Lutheran Church in La Crescent. Pastor E.G. Hertler officiated. They moved to the Hesse family farm in Mindoro. Shirley continued to practice in La Crosse until the birth of her first child. She then farmed full time with her family, purchasing the farm with her husband in 1967. She continued to farm, with her son joining the business in 1980. After the passing of her husband on their wedding anniversary in 1999, she continued to farm in partnership with her son until her passing. She is survived by her son Michael of Mindoro, her daughter Cheryl (Brian)Koss of Rochester, Minnesota, grandsons Jared Koss of Lakeville, Minnesota, Lucas (Gina)Koss of Eyota, Minnesota, granddaughter Hannah Koss of Wichita, Kansas, and great granddaughter Valerie Koss of Eyota. Shirley is further survived by her older sister Elaine (Paul) Klankowski of Zumbrota, Minnesota and younger sister Joyce (George) Kastenschmidt of Winona, Minnesota, and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. She always enjoyed meeting the next generations. She was preceded into death by her husband Maynard in 1999, her parents and her sister-in-law Harriet Goggins and her husband James. Shirley’s funeral will be held Monday December 30th 2019, at 11AM at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church of Burr Oak, State Highway 108, Mindoro, WI. Interment will be next to her husband in the church cemetery awaiting the certain resurrection in Christ. A visitation will be from 3 to 5 on Sunday, December 29.
