Obituary for Bernard G. Clements

Bernie Clements, 93, of Bangor, passed away Monday February 24 at his Bangor home. He was cared for in his final days by his loving and caring wife of 70 years, Theresa, and family members. He was born in Mormon Coulee, in La Crosse County, March 8, 1926 to Rudy and Verna (Hohlfeld) Clements and is the oldest of 9 children. Bernie grew up on a farm and farming was always in his blood. Bernie also loved music and dancing, especially the Polka’s and Waltz’s of his youth where at one of the dances, he met his bride to be, Theresa Cavadini. After a courtship they married, November 9, 1949. Bernie and Theresa bought a farm in Dutch Creek, that remains today in the family, owned and operated by Mike and Shelly Piske. Prior to taking possession of the farm Bernie & Theresa lived with Theresa’s parents, Levi and Emma Cavadini, where Levi and Bernie attended many auctions, purchasing livestock, machinery and a team of horses. When spring arrived in 1950, Bernie and Theresa loaded a wagon with their possessions, hooked up the horses, and drove 1-1/2 miles down the valley to their new home, where Bernie and Theresa started operating their family farm together. They operated a successful dairy and hog farm for 35 years, and raised a family, having 6 daughters and 3 sons. Bernie managed the hogs and the fieldwork and Theresa managed the dairy operation. When it was time for harvest and chores the whole family worked together. During these 35 years he and Theresa always strove for improvement and Bernie was one of the first in the area to utilize minimal till and was a steward of good land and stream management. After Bernie’s retirement in 1985, he still had an active role in planting and harvesting on the family farm helping out in many ways for several years. He was actively involved in the operations of the Bangor School District and served several years on the district school board. He also had a very active interest in land conservation and politics and served on the La Crosse County Board of Supervisors, as District 23 representative from 1986-1990 and again from 1994-2001. Bernie loved attending the sporting events of his children, where they excelled in high school sports, from football, boys and girls track and girls basketball. He was also very proud of the military service of his children, with 5 having served in the Military, where Barbara retired as a Lieutenant Colonel and Bruce retired as a Senior Chief. Bernie and Theresa are devoted to their Catholic Faith. They were active members of St. Peter’s Catholic church in Middle Ridge until their retirement and currently members of St Mary’s Catholic church in Bangor where they regularly worshiped, until Bernie’s physical limitations prevented him from attending Mass. Theresa would bring Bernie Holy Communion and he would watch the televised Mass on Sunday mornings.
