Obituary for Leora M. Cornish


Leora “Lee” Marie (Wincapaw) Cornish, 102, of LaCrosse, formerly of Beloit, died peacefully on April 24, 2020. She was born on Christmas Day, 1917, in Poplar Grove, Illinois, to Glen and Amy (Lillie) Wincapaw. As a young child, Lee moved to Beloit with her family. Lee graduated from Beloit Memorial High School, where she met her future husband, Robert “Bob” Samuel Cornish. At the time of his death they had been married for 80 years.Her calling was working with children, especially kindergartners. Lee was one of the first two teacher’s aides (para-professional) for the La Crosse School District. She loved her work with the children. She was especially proud of her year’s long successful battle to obtain benefits for all the para-professional in the La Crosse School District.Lee is survived by her sons, Kenneth (Martha) of Steuben and Richard (Sylvia) of Kennewick, Washington, 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Lee was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob, sons Robert and James, daughter Linda (Cornish) Krueger, brothers Lloyd and Donald Wincapaw, and sisters, Lila (Wincapaw) Ayers and Vera (Wincapaw) Cross.Lee truly lived her motto, “Don’t criticize, condemn or complain.” She loved her family and friends unconditionally. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
