Obituary for Victor Garness

Victor Garness, 87, of La Crosse died Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at Benedictine Manor, La Crosse. He was born September 15, 1932 in Dodge Center, MN. to Olaf and Gertrude (Chicos) Garness. He was then baptized into the Lutheran faith. He farmed on the home farm until age 1956. He proudly served his country for 2 years in the US Army and 4 years in the Army Reserve. Vic married Harlene Linder in 1955, and to the marriage were born two children a son Bryan and a daughter Gayle. Vic and Harlene later divorced. IN 1990 he married Peggy Waterworth and they would have celebrated their 30th Wedding Anniversary on December 21st of this year. He worked for Coca-Cola for 3 years before finding his true calling as a salesman for W.A. Roosevelt in La Crosse for over 42 years full time, and continued working part time for several years following “retirement”. He was loved by many and performed numerous Mr. Fix It jobs for his neighbors and friends. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Eagles #1254 of La Crosse and a former member of the Masonic Lodge. Among Vic’s other interests were gambling, dancing, golfing, musky fishing and gardening, especially growing his prized tomatoes, only to give most of them away to friends, neighbors and family. Vic is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years, Peggy, one daughter Gayle (Tim) Zakrajsek of Duluth, MN., and their children Sean and Stephen, one son Bryan (Nancy) of Milwaukee, two sisters; Vernice (Glenn) Engelken of Dodge Center, MN., and Margaret Mundt of Owatonna, MN., and one brother Gordon Garness of Dodge Center, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Jean Richling and Anita Medary, one brother Ole’ Jr., two sisters-in-law Shirley and Bonnie Garness and one brother-in-law Wayne Mundt. Memorials in Vic’s honor can be directed to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, La Crosse. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Woodruff Chapel, La Crosse is assisting the family in their time of need
