Obituary for Vernetta C. Johns

Vernetta Caroline Johns, 91, of La Crosse, died at home on October 16, 2011, surrounded by her family.
She was born July 15, 1920, in Eitzen, Minn., to Ferdinand and Frieda (Becker) Pottratz. After high school she helped her mother run a boarding home. Vernetta also worked at Century Photo in La Crosse. On October 30, 1941, she married Arvel Johns and moved to the Johns family homestead dairy farm in Johns Coulee. Vernetta had a natural flow to the ins and outs of being a farmer's wife. Her connection to nature added a sense of joy and discovery to the farm which she shared with all who came to visit. Vernetta's favorite job outside of farm life was helping at Bean's Greenhouse, in La Crosse, where she loved getting her fingers in the dirt, preparing plants and flowers for spring growth. She was also an active leader with the area 4-H group and loved being a part of the Homemaker's Club. Vernetta's church, St. John's United Church of Christ, La Crosse, and her church life was very important to her. Her love of children and music was seen through her dedicated 35 years of being Sunday School Superintendent. Vernetta was a choir member most of her life, a member of the women's guild, an excited participant and planner for many church suppers and picnics, and the church historian. After hearing bell music, she formed, directed, and had great fun with the bell choir and the music they played together.
Survivors include her two daughters, Jewel (Richard) Root of Hastings, Minn., and Dawn (Randy) Swenson of La Crosse; five grandchildren, Jenny (Jason) Schumacher, Erik Root, Heidi (Robert) Miller, Zachary (Caroline) Swenson, and Whitney (Mark) Koelker; and four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Lucas, and Erynn Schumacher, and Isabel Miller.
In addition to her parents, Vernetta was preceded in death by her husband, Arvel; and two sisters, Lorena (Doby) Dobrunz and Evelyn (Rudy) Neidefeldt.
