William R. "Bill" Schaller, 70, of Mindoro, died Friday, November 4, 2011, surrounded by his family at Rochester Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
He was born June 1, 1941, in La Crosse to Arthur and Clara (Kwosek) Schaller.  Bill was a 1960 graduate of West Salem High School.  On December 7, 1974, he married Karen McClintock at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in West Salem.  Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Vietnam War with the Big Red I Infantry.  He was a 44-year life member of Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51 of West Salem, where he served twice as Post Commander and was a lifetime member of the Past Commanders Club.  Bill was also an advisor for the SAL for 27 years, was a committee member with the Court of Honor,  helped with June Dairy Days for many years, and considered the legion members his second family.  He was employed at Trane Company in La Crosse for 40 years from 1965 until his retirement in 2005.  Bill enjoyed deer hunting for most of his life and always looked forward to trout fishing, especially opening day.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; his son, Lynn (Heather Rochester and her daughter, Halli Jo); three sisters, Joanne Herbert, Elizabeth Staff (her friend, Ray Kline), and Aletta (Don) Vian; six brothers, Francis Schaller, John (Marion) Schaller, Douglas (Mary) Schaller, Arthur (Maxine) Schaller, Michael (Lynda) Schaller, and Randy Schaller; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roger and Marvel McClintock; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lynnette (Dennis) Borchert, Renee (Douglas) Jerome, Karl (Diane) Holtz, Nancy Quall, James (Debra) McClintock, and Marilea (Alan) Clements; many nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Maybelle (John) Konrad; three brothers-in-law, Jack Herbert, Clifton Staff, and Milan Quall; and two sisters-in-law, Georgina Schaller and Ramona Holtz.
Funeral services will be Saturday, November 12, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem.  Rev. Galen J. Riediger will officiate.  Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery with military honors by the West Salem American Legion Post 51 and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard.  Friends may call at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church, West Salem, on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and also on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.  Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, (Jostad Chapel), West Salem, is in charge of arrangements.  Online condolences may be sent at www.jandtfredrickson.com.
