Obituary for Roland H. Bolduan


Roland H. Bolduan, 89, of Caledonia, Minn., passed away peacefully Saturday, December 24, 2011, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, following a stroke in early October and a three year battle with cancer.
He was born March 23, 1922, the eldest son of Frank and Martha (Burmester) Bolduan, at home, in Union Township, Caledonia, Minn. Roland attended rural grade school and graduated from Caledonia High School in 1940. Following graduation, he worked on the family farm until purchasing his own farm, also in Union Township, in 1950. Roland and Arlys Roth were married October 20, 1951, at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Caledonia, where he was a lifelong member. He was on various church boards and served as its Chairman for a number of years. Roland was a progressive thinking person and was awarded the Soil Conservation Award in 1968 for conservation practices and improvements. He was director agent for Mound Prairie Insurance Company for 47 years, retiring in 2008. In 1977, he and Arlys moved into Caledonia. Throughout his lifetime, Roland enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, golfing, traveling, playing cards, and spending time with his family. He had been a member of the Caledonia Lions Club, Snowmobile Club, and the Wild Turkey Federation.
In addition to his wife of 60 years, Roland is survived by their five children, Ruth (Ed) Wieser of La Crescent, Minn., Joe (Laurie) Bolduan, Dan Bolduan (Lisa Hughes), and Mark Bolduan, all of Caledonia, and Renae (Todd) Tydrich of La Crosse, Wis.; his 12 grandchildren, Shawn (Robin) Wieser, Jesse Wieser (Michelle Steinfeldt), and Jodi (Nick) Erdmann, all of La Crescent, Minn., Jeremy (Kelli) Bolduan of New Ulm, Minn., Adam (Tiffany) Bolduan of La Crosse, Wis., Sarah (Joel) Christensen of La Crescent, Minn., Keith Bolduan of La Crosse, Wis., Matthew Bolduan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Andy (Stephanie) Miller of Fond du Lac, Wis., and Jordan Miller and Dylan and Colton Tydrich, all of La Crosse, Wis.; his 14 great-grandchildren, Bailey, Taylor, Kiara, Kailey, Lucas, Brody, Collin, Braden, Trevor, Ashley, Emerson, Jonah, Bella, and Claire, and one on the way in early 2012; his sibblings, Dolores Schmidt of Rushford, Minn., Verna (Gorden) Gerdes of Ridgeway, Minn., and Marcile Kuecker, Alice (Donald) Diersen, and Burton (Joyce) Bolduan, all of Caledonia; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Roland was preceded in death by his brother, Frank in infancy;  one grandson, Brian Bolduan; one granddaughter, Erin Bolduan; one great-granddaughter, Lola Bolduan; two brothers-in-law, Melvin Schmidt and Mervin Kuecker; and a brother and sister-in-law, Almon and Lyn Roth.
Roland was a person of deep, quiet, faith, a very caring husband and father, always offering advice and direction up until the very end of his life. He will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, 650 N. Kingston St., Caledonia. Rev. Tom Schultz will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Caledonia, on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and also on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
