Obituary for Walter R. "Wally" Mashak


Walter R. "Wally" Mashak, 89, of Bangor, Wis., died Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at Mulder Health Care Facility, West Salem, Wis.

He was born April 28, 1922, at home in Middle Ridge to John and Ruth (Marion) Mashak.  Wally was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the European Theatre with the 40th Engineer Combat Regiment from 1943-1945.  On November 28, 1950, he married Anna Sedevie in Middle Ridge.  Wally owned and operated the Sportsman's Bar in Bangor for many years.  He was a very faithful and active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bangor.  Wally was also a member of the Anderson-Good American Legion Post 40 of Bangor and the Bangor VFW Post 8278.

He was a staunch Democrat, an avid baseball fan, especially the Cincinnati Reds, and also enjoyed hunting.  Wally loved visiting with his family and friends and had an unbelievable memory.  He spent alot of time with his brother, Harold, and they enjoyed being together.  The family would like to especially thank Harold for always being there for Wally and helping him so much.

Survivors include his wife, Anna; 11 children, Linda (special friend, Richard Norton) Olson of Viroqua, Wis., Terry (Rhonda) of Bangor, Tom (Char) of Rozet, Wyo., Paul of Tomah, Wis., Jean (Andrew) Kirkeng of Gillette, Wyo., Joan Mashak of Onalaska, Wis., Mary (Dennis) Piper of Bangor, Gerry of Tomah, Rita (Michael Buchanan) Mashak of Gillette, Wyo., Robert (Melanie) of Animas, N.M., Carleen Mashak of Salt Lake City, Utah; 20 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harold (Mary) and Leo (Doris), both of Bangor, and Clarence (Kris) of Rapid City, S.D.; three sisters, Orma Mitchell, Mildred Sackmaster, and Roseanne Kazmierczak, all of La Crosse, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Skylar; two brothers, Earl (Irene) and John (Bernice); four brothers-in-law; and other relatives.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, January 14, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bangor.  Father Bob Hegenbarth and Monsignor Robert Hundt will officiate.  Following the service, military honors will be performed by the Bangor American Legion Post 40 and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard.  Burial will be held at a later date in the church cemetery.  Friends may call at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Friday beginning at 5:00 p.m. and concluding with a rosary at 6:45 p.m.  Friends may also call at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Memorials may be given to St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Bangor First Responders, or to a charity of the donor's choice.  Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Bangor, (608-486-4999) is assisting the family with the arrangements.  Online condolences may be sent at www.jandtfredrickson.com.
