Obituary for Elaine P. "Lany" Horstman

Elaine P. "Lany" Horstman
Elaine P. "Lany" Horstman, 82, of Sparta, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 28, 2012, with her family by her side at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
She was born July 9, 1930, in Spring Grove, Minn., to Peter and Marie (Lebakken) Hougstad.  On October 21, 1961, she married Del Horstman at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in La Crosse and they have shared over 51 years of marriage.  Lany loved flowers and enjoyed sewing and doing crafts, especially counted cross-stitch.  Her hands were never idle and always kept busy with one project or another.  When she wasn't doing crafts, she enjoyed baking and cooking and her family knew they had better be at the table ready to eat when the food was hot!  Lany also looked forward to the times traveling with her husband in his semi-truck which she encouraged him to buy.  No matter where they went, she would always try and bring back a pine cone to add to her collection.  Lany also enjoyed listening to her niece's husband, Wally Tranberg, sing and play his guitar, even during her last days in the hospital as she tapped her feet to the music.
Survivors include her husband, Del; three children, Debra (Tab) Gunderson of Mindoro, Cynthia (Duane) Hanson of Viroqua, and Lisa (James) Kleist of Houston, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Jenna, Matthew, and Michael Gunderson, Katie and Carrie Hanson, and Cameron and Jordan Kleist; one great-granddaughter, Riley Gunderson; four brothers-in-law, Jerry Tabacco, Glen (Judy) Horstman, Bob Garves, and Ed Fisher; four sisters-in-law, Mildred (Harold) Zeman, Doris Reamer, Arlene (Dallas) Wegner, and Helen Horstman; many nieces and nephews; and her dog, Snuggles, who was very special to her.  She was preceded in death by her parents; six sisters, Myrtle (Arthur) Hjelsand, Palma (Arthur) Watson, Vivian Tabacco, Ruth (Roy) Scholl, Gladys (Morris) Iverson, and Lucille (Herman) Tewes; her nephew, Donald Watson; three brothers-in-law, Waldemar "Wally" Horstman, Verdell Horstman, and Dave Reamer; and two sisters-in-law, Elaine Garves and Delores Fisher.
Funeral services will be Monday, December 31, 2012, at 12:00 noon at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 359 N. Leonard St., West Salem.  Rev. Roger Grow will officiate.  Burial will be in Burns Cemetery.  Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Hwy 162 and Hattan St., Bangor, on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Online condolences may be sent at
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, especially 6th floor, hospice, and the chaplains, for the wonderful care that was given to Lany.  They are also grateful to Rev. Roger Grow and all those who visited her and gave support to the family.
