Obituary for Mildred M. "Millie" (Groeschel) Reed

Mildred M. “Millie” (Groeschel) Reed, 80, of La Crosse, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Bethany Riverside Nursing Facility, La Crosse.
She was born April 27, 1932, in Vernon County, Wis., to Albert and Christina (Zink) Groeschel. Millie was the third in a family of six children and remembers some of the hardships of growing up during the years of the Great Depression. She was married to Roger Reed in October of 1956. Millie’s dream was to be a teacher. She graduated from the Vernon County Teachers’ College in Viroqua in 1953, and later attended UW-La Crosse where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1963. Millie retired from teaching in 1996. She loved gardening, growing flowers and fresh veggies, and took meticulous care of her gardens and her yard. Millie was an accomplished seamstress who had a passion for sewing.
Survivors include her daughter, Sara (Todd) Wedwick; two sisters, Ruth Smith and Emily (Willard) Culver; nephews and nieces, Chris Smith, Lorin Culver (partner, Jorge Bravo), Amy (Josh) Connaughty, John (Chrystal) Groeschel, Alison (Dan) Harper, Tina McCracken, Gary (Laurie) Lee, David (Linda Tuson) Lee, Carol Lee, and Michael Lee; many great-nieces and great-nephews; two sisters-in-law, Patricia (Milo) Lee and Catherine Reed; and many special neighbors, other relatives, and friends.
Millie was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her siblings, Charles Groeschel, Dorothy (Glen) Meyer, and Glen Groeschel.
Memorial services will be Monday, March 11, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, (Woodruff Chapel), 4239 Mormon Coulee Rd., La Crosse. Rev. Jonathan Rimmert will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
