Obituary for Steven D. "Steve" Bankes

Steven D. “Steve” Bankes, 59, of La Crosse, peacefully passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2013, at home in his favorite chair after a three year courageous battle with cancer.
He was born April 26, 1953, in La Crosse in the old La Crosse Grandview Building to Ervin and Marilyn (Proksch) Bankes. Steve grew up in Norwalk, Calif., where he graduated in 1971 from Norwalk High School. After graduation, he spent four years in the U.S. Navy, which he was really proud of. He moved back to the La Crosse area in 1985, and was a truck driver for 35 years until retiring from Con-Way Freight in 2011. Steve was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings and would show off his colors any chance he could. He was also a big fan of the outdoors and loved fishing, boating, camping, and hunting. At any event he attended, you could always find him attached to his camera, which was his number one passion, but only taking second place to his faith and church. Steve also played the guitar in the worship team at Hope Community Church in West Salem. He was a very patriotic person and loved his country. There wasn’t a task he couldn’t do, and if he didn’t know how to accomplish something, he would research it, or try and figure it out on his own. He definitely was a “jack-of-all-trades”.
He is survived by the love of his life, Lynn; three sons, Aaron, Jason (Marla), and Matthew (Sarah); four step-children, Andrea Smith, Adam Palm, Brian Palm, and Christopher Palm; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three sisters, Jill (Alan) Hanson, Geri (Jeffrey) Farr, and Jan (Luke) Mahr; one brother-in-law, Brian Innerbichler; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many, many other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jacqueline Innerbichler.
As a loving husband, father, brother, and friend, his strength, courage, and faith were felt by all and will truly be missed.

The family would like to express very heartfelt gratitude for the care, love, and devotion given by the Gundersen Lutheran Hospice Care staff.
