Obituary for Dorothy "Dottie" Hicks

Dorothy M. "Dottie" Hicks, 89, of West Salem, passed away November 10, 2020, at the Onalaska Care Center; where she had been a resident for the past two and a half years. Dottie was born September 29, 1931, to Einar and Emma (Nelson) Severson. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in West Salem. Dottie graduated from West Salem High School in 1949. On November 30, 1949, Dottie married Lorenzo Hicks. After their marriage they moved to Belvidere, Ill. While there, Dottie worked for the Admiral Corporation for 11 years before they returned to the West Salem area. Music came naturally for Dottie. She was an excellent musician and played the accordion in a dance band from 1969 to 1992. She was equally at home at the keyboard of the piano. Dottie was a member of the Presbyterian Church in West Salem. She was active in the UPW and helped with many of the annual salad luncheons and rummage sales. Survivors include her two daughters, Susan and Sherri (Paul); four grandchildren, Becky, Laura, Crystal, and James; five great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; brothers and sisters-in-laws; and many friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Lorenzo; three sisters, Gladys (Glen) Kirchner, Elfreda (Donald) Mitchell, and Violet (William) Weiss; and two brothers, Alvin (Ann) Severson and James Severson. A private family graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Presbyterian Church of West Salem, P.O. Box 861, West Salem, WI 54669, or a charity of the donor's choice. The family wishes to thank the Onalaska Care Center for the wonderful care Dottie received while she was a resident there.
