Obituary for John E. Peterson


John Edward Peterson (Pete), 93, of Stoddard, WI, passed away on February 10, 2024, at Creamery Creek Senior Living, Stoddard, WI.

He was born on February 1, 1931, to Abraham and Hazel Peterson in Houston, MN. On Feb. 7, 1953, he married Helen Graffin. Pete served for 20 years in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Elmendorf Airforce Base, AK; Truax Field, WI; Fairbanks, AK; Bunner Hill, IN; Clovis, NM; Biloxi, MS; Wadena, MN; Adair Air Force Station, OR; and Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA. He retired from the service in 1968 as a Senior Master Sergeant. The family then settled in Stoddard, WI. Pete pursued a second career as an instrumentation technician with the Dairyland Power Cooperative, Genoa, WI.

Pete and Helen went on many trips over the years. They visited numerous scenic western sites including the Tetons, the Grand Canyon, and Crater Lake. On their 50th anniversary, they went to Australia and New Zealand.

Pete was proceeded in death by his parents, step-father Ira Buckbee, Helen, and sisters Eunice Johnson and Edith Brekke. He is survived by his son John II, his daughter-in-law Leslie, and grandson Matthew of Lakewood, CO; son David of La Crosse, WI; sister Genevieve Standfield of Wellington, OH; sister-in-law Elaine Herbison of Eugene, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the Stoddard Community Methodist Church, 900 Broadway St, Stoddard, WI 54658. A visitation will take place from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. A graveside service for both John and Helen will be held the same day at 2:00 P.M. in the Stoddard Village Cemetery. To honor John's military service, military honors will be rendered by the United States Air Force Funeral Honor Guard at the cemetery.
