Obituary for Marlin "Mookie" Schmidt

Marlin “Mookie” James Schmidt passed away unexpectedly and peacefully at his home on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at the age of 75. He was born on March 28, 1942, to Leo and Lavila (Hass) Schmidt. Mookie graduated from West Salem High School. He married Sandy Proudfoot on July 14, 1973, in Dresbach, Minn. Mookie worked at the Co-op, NCR, Waco, and retired from Coulee Region Enterprise. He served in the Army National Guard during the Vietnam Era. Mookie was a chicken fryer and the 2016 Parade Marshal for June Dairy Days, a volunteer firefighter, a member of the Rod & Gun Club, and the Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51 of West Salem where he also served on the funeral honor guard. He attended the Ice Bowl, loved to hunt, fish, play cards, fantasy sports, spending time at Bass Camp, and socializing with everyone he met. Survivors include his wife, Sandra; daughter, Tracey (Tim) Rogers; son, James Schmidt (Jill); grandson, Kyle (Jen) Rogers; granddaughter, Kayla (Mitch) Pliner; two great-grandsons, Landon Pliner and Maddox Rogers; brothers, Robert (Ursula) Schmidt and Donald Schmidt; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; two brothers, Kenneth and David; niece, Donna; and nephew, Kenny. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Hamilton Cemetery in West Salem. Pastor Stephanie M. Steiner will officiate. Military honors will be rendered by the American Legion Post 51 of West Salem and the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard. A celebration of life will follow at the American Legion Post 51, 148 Leonard St., West Salem. Online condolences may be sent at
