Obituary for Steven L. "Tabs" Tabor

Steven L. "Tabs" Tabor, 70, of West Salem passed away Friday, June 28, 2019 at his home. He was born November 27, 1948 in La Crosse to Albert and Mary Ruth (Walsh) Tabor. He graduated from West Salem High School, Class of 1966. Steve started his secondary education at UW- LaCrosse. He was initially drafted into the military and then enlisted in the United States Army. Steve successfully completed courses in operating room procedures, allowing him to serve as an Army medic. For one year, he proudly served his country in a mobile unit in South Vietnam. Shortly after joining the military, he married his High School sweetheart, Rachel Mulder on February 15th, 1969 @ St. Leo’s Church in West Salem. Also, during this time, he became a father to two daughters, Jennifer (Jenny) and Catherine (Cathy). Nine years later, Steve and Rachel would welcome their youngest daughter, Amanda (Mandy). He was certainly outnumbered with girls! Upon returning from his military duties, Steve took a course in woodworking. His wood working skills would become valuable hobby for many projects in his home. Steve continued his education, allowing him to qualify to become Administrator of Mulder Health Care Facility in West Salem. Several years later, Steve took a supervisory position with RGIS; completing inventory in several stores in the local area. He then secured a position with the US Postal Service, where he was employed until his retirement in 2013. Steve had a pragmatic nature and a dry “witty” sense of humor. No one was spared from being teased and occasionally harassed, by his common sense approach to lived experiences. Steve had many good friends and savored his time spent camping, eating out or just having cocktails. Among many of his joys in life were; playing billiards, cards, darts, canoeing, baseball and football. Steve could spend hours watching sport after sport on television. He loved to read newspapers and was challenged with completing many cross-word puzzles. Perhaps his greatest passions were good music and the many years riding his Harley Davidson with Rachel. Steve and Rachel rode thousands of miles, traveling to Canada, Arkansas, and Sturgis South Dakota. Riding motorcycle allowed Steve to meet new friends and develop comradery with liked minded Harley riders. Many trips with friends to various places in Mexico brought great memories, each time. In an effort to escape some of the winter months, Steve and Rachel took their camper to both Arizona and Texas. This past February, Steve and Rachel reached an Anniversary milestone-50 years of marriage. Steve was a very proud Grandfather “papa”, to 8 grandchildren and was to be a Great-Grandfather to a baby born later in 2019. He was excited for this new baby! Incidentally, about a week prior to Steve’s passing, he had been given a date in September 2019, for his turn on the Freedom Honor Flight. Dad, “papa” you will be deeply missed! Steve is survived by his wife Rachel, daughter Jennifer (Brad Godwin) Tabor and children Mason, Brittany and Dylan; daughter, Catherine (Jerod) Hansen and their children Zachary, Madelyn, Jeron and Jaxon; daughter, Amanda (Josh)Wilber and their daughter Ariana; his brother, Mike (Julie) Tabor. Steve is also survived by several other family members. Steve was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Mary Ruth Tabor, brother in law, Bob Mulder Jr. and in-laws Robert Sr. & Grace Mulder. Friends and relatives are invited to a visitation on Monday, July 15, 2019 from 2:00-4:00pm at the Jandt Fredrickson Funeral Home, 121 Youlon St N, West Salem, WI.
