Obituary for Lester H. Wiegrefe


Lester H. Wiegrefe, 94, formerly of Caledonia, Minn., passed away Sunday, Aug. 25, 2019, at Spring Grove Assisted Living, Spring Grove, Minn. He was born Nov. 18, 1924, in Caledonia to Herman and Ella (Beneke) Wiegrefe. Lester attended school in Eitzen thru the sixth grade. He then attended country school for seventh and eighth grades before attending Caledonia High School and graduating in 1942. Lester then attended one year at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, but returned home to help his father on the family farm. On September 23, 1945, Lester married Charlotte Roble at the Wilmington Lutheran Church. Together they farmed in the Eitzen and Caledonia areas until 1980 when they moved to Caledonia. In addition to farming, Lester sold insurance for Wilmington Mutual Insurance Company. Lester also was a member of the Caledonia Lion’s Club and the Caledonia Masonic Lodge and he served on the Board of Directors for the Tri-State Breeders Co-op in Westby, Wis. Lester enjoyed sports and during his high school years, played football, baseball, and basketball. He also enjoyed playing golf throughout his life. Charlotte preceded Lester in death on March 12, 2005. Survivors include one daughter, Jean Johnson of Fort Benning, Ga.; two sons, Jerry Wiegrefe of Hastings, Minn., and Charles (Shari) Wiegrefe of Caledonia; seven grandchildren, Scott (Janel) Wiegrefe, Jessie (Blake) Diana, Heather (Adam) Kuecker, Heidi (Phil) Doering, Wendy (Joe) Rask, Mandy Schutz, and Melissa (Adam) Herfendal; 12 great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Ruby Wiegrefe, Noah and Jada Diana, Amelia Kuecker, Lauren and Hailey Doering, Jeanette and Michaela Rask, Breanna Schutz, and Logan and Talon Herfendal; one sister, Margaret (Jack) Nelson of Caledonia; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Lester was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Liz Wiegrefe; a grandson-in-law, Jeff Schutz; one sister, Marie (Neil) Comstock; and one brother, Leonard (Lillie) Wiegrefe. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 1, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Steven E. Meyer will officiate. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. A visitation will be from 12 noon until the time of service Sunday at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Immanuel Lutheran Church of Caledonia or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
