Obituary for Marion J. Berg "GG"


Marion J. Berg “GG”, 89, formerly of Barre Mills, passed away Monday, November 4, 2019, at Mulder Health Care Facility in West Salem. She was born June 13, 1930, in the La Crosse Hospital to Erwin and Marie (Thielker) Hoppman. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Barre Mills. On September 15, 1948, she married Hilbert Berg and he preceded her in death in 1994. Together they farmed in Barre Mills for over 50 years. Marion was known as “GG” by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the Barre Patch children. She enjoyed taking bus trips with her friends, organizing bus trips to Brewers games, playing cards with the Merry Barre Widows Club, and doing jig saw puzzles and sudoko puzzles. Marion was a lifetime member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Barre Mills where she was active in Ladies Aid and served as president for many years. She also helped at the live nativity at Riverside Park during the holiday season. Marion was also active in the farming community as a Farm Bureau member and was named Mrs. Farm Bureau. She was instrumental in starting the Pet Barn at the La Crosse Interstate Fair. Marion was active in June Dairy Days serving on the Diary Tent Committee for many years as well as serving on the June Dairy Days Promotion Committee visiting schools. She hosted the La Crosse County Guernsey Twilight meetings and in 2010, she received the Wisconsin Guernsey Breeders Pioneer Breeders Award. Marion served as Town of Barre Treasurer for more than 25 years and she was active in the Barre Community Club, hosting sales dinners. She was even named as Citizen of the Year of the Town of Barre in 1991. Lastly, Marion served as a 4-H leader including selling Christmas trees on the farm for many years. She also cooked at Luther High and Barre Patch Day Care and volunteered at Good Steward in La Crosse. Survivors include three sons and their wives, Curtis and Pam Berg and Kenneth and Lynette Berg, all of Barre Mills, and Ronald and Tina Berg of Westminster, S.C.; grandchildren, Jennifer Clark, Matt Berg, Tracey Heath, Travis Berg, Tanya Berg, Tiffany Chapman, and Brandon Berg; four step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers and their wives, Dan and Kathy Hoppman of Elgin, Ill., Wayne and Marilyn Hoppman of Barre Mills, and Joyce Hoppman (husband, Dale is deceased) of Ontario; several sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many special friends at Salem Manor. In addition to her husband, Marion was preceded in death by her parents; in-laws; brother, Dale; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 9, 2019, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Barre Mills. Rev. Andrew Schultz will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 8, 2019, and 10 a.m until time of service on Saturday, both at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes, Jostad Chapel, West Salem, is assisting the family in their time of need.
