Obituary for William H. "Bill" Sandman

William H. "Bill" Sandman, 74, of West Salem, died Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at his home after a brief struggle with cancer.
He was born January 24, 1937, in Sparta to Harold William and Elda (Meyer) Sandman and raised in Dutch Creek, Bangor.  Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served from 1957-1959.  On November 11, 1959, he married Muriel Horstman at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in West Salem, where he was a member who also served six years on the church council, was secretary for three years, and was head usher for many years.  Bill was a barber in West Salem for 41 years.  He enjoyed playing softball for several years and sponsored his own team called "Bill's Clippers".  His favorite pastime was attending his grandchildren's athletic events and he always looked forward to going to his farm with them to tend to the animals, which he considered to be "his therapy".  Bill will be sadly missed by his loving family and especially his special pets, Willy and Lucky, who will never again receive another one of Bill's hair cuts! 
Survivors include his wife, Muriel; three children, Barbara (Rodney) Mellor of West Salem, Rodney (Lori) Sandman of Trevor, Wis., and Becky (Richard) Hundt of West Salem; 7 grandchildren, Angela, Rachel, and Emily Mellor, Brandon and Leah Hundt, and Michael and Kevin Sandman; a great-granddaughter, Madelyn Mellor; his sister, Karen Wagner of West Salem; his niece, Kathy Duke of Blair, Neb.; a special cousin, Herb Wehrenberg; two brothers-in-law, Doug and Ken Horstman; four sisters-in-law, Marvel (Roger) McClintock, Janice Abraham, and Dorothy and Sharon Horstman; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Barbara Sandman; two brothers-in-law, Ralph Schultz and Jim Wagner; and other relatives.
Memorial services will be Friday, October 21, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem.  Rev. Galen Riediger will officiate.  Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bangor, with military honors by the Anderson-Good American Legion Post 40 of Bangor and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard.  Friends may call at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. and also on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Christ Ev. Lutheran Church and School in West Salem, the Mayo Clinic Health System - La Crosse Cancer Center, the American Heart Association, or to a charity of the donor's choice.  Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, (Jostad Chapel), West Salem, is in charge of arrangements.
