Obituary for LeRoy N. Meiners


LeRoy Neil Meiners, 80, of Eitzen, Minn., passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 6, 2011, at Caledonia Care & Rehab with his family by his side.
LeRoy was born October 4, 1931, at home in Allamakee County, Iowa, to Roy & Lora (Haar) Meiners and was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s U.C.C. in Eitzen, Minn.  He graduated from Caledonia High School in 1950 and entered the U.S. Army in 1951. He was sent to Fort Riley, Kansas, for training and was stationed in Japan and Korea during the Korean Conflict, returning home in 1954. On June 1, 1955, he was united in marriage to Bernice Burmester at Zion Lutheran Church in Eitzen.  They were blessed with five children: Gary, Jerry, Cindy, Randy, and Holly.  LeRoy served on the St. Luke’s U.C.C. church council, the Eitzen Lions Club, the Eitzen Volunteer Fire Department, and the Eitzen City Council.  He was also a loyal member of the Loveless-Eikens American Legion Post 191 of Caledonia and Houston County VFW Post 3833 for 54 years.  In his younger years, he worked for various farmers and worked as a mechanic for Boots & Kenny’s Service Station in Eitzen.  In the late 1970’s, LeRoy started his own petroleum business with Farm Service, hauling fuel to many farmers in the surrounding area.  He also purchased his uncle Frank Haar’s school buses and he and his wife transported children to the Caledonia School District for many years.  LeRoy sold his buses and fuel truck in 1996 and retired, going on many bus trips with his wife throughout the states which they enjoyed very much and made many friends. Several years ago, he encountered many health issues but always enjoyed spending time with his family and playing cards with friends.  He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice; his children, Gary (Maureen) of Brownsville, Minn., Jerry (Connie) of Eyota, Minn., Cindy (Joe) Wiebke of Caledonia, Minn., Randy (Pam) of Eitzen, Minn., and Holly (Mike) Felten of Caledonia, Minn.; 11 grandchildren, Kevan Meiners of New Albin, Iowa, Kasey (Ashley) Meiners of Eitzen, Tyler (Krysta) Meiners of Eyota, Teresa Meiners of Rochester, Minn., Travis Meiners of Eyota, Chad (Jenna) Wiebke and Cory (Crystal Meyer) Wiebke, both of Caledonia, Rachel (Dustin) Meyer of Mabel, Minn., Mitch Meiners of New Albin, and Lauren and Dylan Felten, both of Caledonia; three great-grandchildren, Lily Jo and Ellie Rae Wiebke, and Kiptyn LeRoy Meiners; two sisters, Ruby Pohlman and Beverly (Elmer) Rud, both of Caledonia; one brother, Bob (Marlene) Meiners of Caledonia; one sister-in-law, Charlotte Burmester of Caledonia; and many nieces and nephews. LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ardell (Loretta) Meiners; one granddaughter, Macenzi Meiners; two brothers-in-law, Elmer Pohlman and Harold Burmester; a sister-in-law, Marvella (Edwin) Kinneberg; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Ella Burmester; and a nephew, David Kinneberg.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke's U.C.C., Eitzen.  Rev. Kent A. Meyer, Ph.D., will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Friends may call at St. Luke's U.C.C., Eitzen, on Tuesday, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and also on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
