Elsie Marie Hemker

 

Elsie Marie Hemker, 94, of Bangor, passed away Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Lakeview Health Center, West Salem.

She was born October 23, 1917, in the Town of Burns to John and Ida (Berg) Hemker.  Elsie attended grade school at the Striped School.  Her family moved off the farm to Bangor in 1939.  Elsie worked as a housekeeper for several families in Bangor.  She then worked for many years at La Crosse Garment Company and Jack Winters in La Crosse.  Elsie was an expert seamstress.  She made many articles of clothing, doll clothes, stuffed animals, sleeping bags, and tents.  She also enjoyed crocheting fancy doilies and sharing family history and photos with her family.  She traveled with family on summer vacations and visited most of the states and also Canada.  She enjoyed fishing in northern Minnesota.  Elsie liked to watch Lawrence Welk, The Waltons, and Little House on the Prairie.  Elsie resided at Helen House in Bangor from August 2002 until October 2011 and then moved to Cedar Lane at Lakeview Health Center in West Salem until the time of her death.

Survivors include her sister, Dorothy Solberg of Augusta, Wis.; her brother, Edwin (Elberta) Hemker of West Salem; her sisters-in-law, Mary Hemker of Bangor and Donna Hemker of West Salem; her nieces and nephews, Beverly (Duane) Olson, Robert (Carol) Hemker, Karla (Fred) Pierson, James (Mary Ann) Hemker, Terry (Dee Dee) Hemker, Bonnie (Tom) Garbers, Charles (Linda) Hemker, John Hemker, Julie (Chris) Linhart, Joe (Lisa) Hemker, Donna Condron, Ruth Solberg, Karen (Ralph) Meyer, Sandy Apa, Barb (Brian) Akey, Richard (Mary) Hemker, Dave (Angie) Hemker, and Debbie Weber; many great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and several cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Walter (Arlene), Charles (Joyce), Herbert, Raymond, and Eldor Hemker; and a brother-in-law, Merle Solberg.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 401  16th Ave. No., Bangor.  Pastor Roy Hefti will officiate.  Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Bangor.  Friends and family may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Hwy 162 and Hattan St., Bangor, on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Memorials may be given to St. Paul's Ev.
