Obituary for Phyllis Berg


Phyllis M. Berg, formerly of Bangor, passed away peacefully at Riverside Transitional Care on April 24, 2024 at the age of 93.

She was born April 15, 1931, to Melvin and Olga (Gilbertson) Bryhn. During the time she was teaching at several one room rural schools, she met and married Norman Berg. Together they ran the family dairy farm in Burns Valley. They had three children, Gary, Kevin, and Nancy. Phyllis was active in Homemakers and as a leader in the Striped Strivers 4-H Club. She enjoyed being involved with the La Crosse County Fair 4-H Projects. Phyllis loved to bake Norwegian treats any time of the year, but especially at Christmas. She loved nature and being outside gardening and birdwatching.

She is survived by her sons, Gary (Linda) Berg of West Salem and Kevin (Melody) Berg of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Kyle and Alyson Berg, Austin and Spencer Berg, Megan (Evan) Gundlach and Derrick (Samantha) and Jeffrey Collins; one great-grandchild, Sophia Gundlach; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Norman, daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Todd Collins; brother and sister-in-law, Orville and Dorothy Bryhn; and sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Orvis Olson.

A Christian Funeral Service will be held Monday, April 29, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 401 16th Ave N, Bangor, WI. Rev. Brock Groth will officiate. Burial will follow in Burns Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service, Monday, at the church.

The family thanks Brookdale Senior Living Onalaska, Riverside Transitional Care, and Mayo Health System for the wonderful care given her.
