Obituary for Shirley Rae Stintzi

Shirley Rae Stintzi

Shirley Rae Stintzi, 71, of Bangor, passed away Monday evening, January 31, 2011, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse, after an unexpected stroke.  Shirley’s final days were surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in some small way throughout her very memorable life.  Children, grandchildren, siblings, cousins, nephews, nieces, friends, neighbors, congregation members, and her cardiac rehabilitation group provided her with much comfort, peace, and love.

Shirley was born September 22, 1939, to Edward and Lillian (Plagens) Gates in Bangor, the thirteenth child of a loving family. She graduated from Bangor High School and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, majoring in Physical Education.  Shirley married Jack Stintzi, also of Bangor, and they began a life together that would be blessed with three children, Scott, Kelli and Mandi.  After many years as a teacher and devoted mother and wife, Shirley recently retired from Farmer’s State Bank (River Bank) and has spent the last few years traveling extensively and enjoying a peaceful life in her hometown among close neighbors and a loving community. She always looked forward to trips with special friends and to the many visits to see her three grandsons, whom she adored, and who knew her lovingly as “Gamma.”

Shirley will be missed by a number of people too great for print.  She is survived by her children, Scott of Portland, Wis., Kelli (Jed) Morash of Dallas, Texas, and Mandi (Taylor) Smack of Afton, Va.  Very dear to her heart were her grandsons, Jackson Morash and Hayden and Evan Smack.  Sisters, Alice Sawyer, Doris Gates, and Frances (Tom) Poole also survive Shirley, as well as additional relatives (especially Susan Schaller), and friends in Bangor, La Crosse, and Green Bay.  She was preceded in death by her husband on June 5, 2006; her parents; five brothers; and four sisters.

We will be gathering to celebrate and remember Shirley’s life before laying her to rest.  All friends, neighbors and relatives are warmly invited to join us Friday, February 4, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. for a wake remembrance at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Hwy 162 and Hattan St., Bangor. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church of Bangor, 1612 Pearl St.  Rev. Cindy Arndt will officiate.  A visitation will also be held at the church on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service.  There will be no burial.  In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Heart Association are preferred.  Online condolences may be sent at

Be not sorrowful that I am gone

And my earthly life is done.

Be not sad I passed away;

For in you, my children,

I live each day.

There is a little of me in all of you.

In each new one I live anew.

So you see, I’ll never really be gone,

As long as there are children to carry on.

I have had my share of love, sorrow and strife.

I have lived a full and fruitful life.

So do not mourn, and do not weep,

For I have earned this peaceful sleep.

We will always love you Gamma!
